Sandy and Secrets wow home town
An age of innocence returned to the Altrincham Garrick as the multi-talented Sixties tribute band Sandy and the Secrets rocked up in their home town. A sell out audience gave a standing ovation to the mix of young, not so young and glamorous band members who had treated them to two hours of non-stop magical nostalgia with hits from The Shadows, The Beachboys, Dusty Springfeild, Elivis, The Beatles et al. Established by Hale based former Injury Lawyers4U co-founder Martin Cockx, Sandy and the Secrets is a classic four-piece band with lead, rhythm, bass guitar and drums led by the fabulous singer, actress and bobby socks sweet heart Kathy Brooke. She held the evening together between sets telling a clever a star is born boy meets girl narrative saucily unfolding to highlight each wonderfully memorable song. If you like your music full of melody, beat, romance, humour and memorable lyrics and are mystified by rap, garage and grunge, this was an evening to savour and punters of all ages certainly went home pleased, no doubt still singing along. Alongside Kathy was lead guitar and singer Joe Cockx, a genuine maestro in the making, who played those familiar chords with a fantastic flourish, harmonizing perfectly with stylish rhythm guitar Hayden Gouveia and accomplished drummer Tom Wildgust. Martin himself drilled the evening on bass, letting the younger members take centre stage having prepared the event with meticulous detail and professional, polished discipline. With a series of classic backdrops from the American diner to the Fifties vaudeville theatre it was an event for the eyes as well as the ears. But above all it was a night in which you were allowed to wear your heart on your sleeve, allowed to tell a girl she was your sweet heart and an evening without a hint of cynicism and world weariness.
