Boxing hero Nigel drops in on Crewe
RING legend Nigel Benn thrilled young boxing enthusiasts when he paid a surprise visit to their training centre in Crewe.

The two-times world champion was in town to help promote a charity boxing night in Nantwich next spring raising money for Christie Hospital and the British Heart Foundation.

He dropped in on the South Cheshire ABC Club on Middlewich Street where he met young members and South Cheshire businessman Ken Lawton who is organising the night.

Former kickboxing champion Ken, 57, owner of Alpha Omega Securities in Crewe, is going back in the ring after 26 years in a bid to raise a big sum for the charities.

Coaches are giving support as he trains at ABC every morning to get in shape for the exhibition bout at Nantwich Civic Hall on March 29.

He said: “I contacted Nigel through his agent and before we knew it he was on his way up from his home in Essex to show his support.

“It’s amazing the interest the night has generated.
We have some great local companies onboard as sponsors and already more than 250 tickets have sold.”

The fundraiser is dubbed ‘Road to the Ring’ and Ken’s bid to prepare for the bout against his old sparring partner Pete ‘Shuff’ Shufflebotham, 51, will feature in a film shown on the night.

A host of celebrity boxers will be part of the evening including Frank Bruno, Tony Bellew, Carl Froch, Tim Witherspoon and Joe Egan.

Nigel Benn said: “Ken and Pete are excellent examples of how you can overcome any obstacles to reach your goals. No matter what, if it’s in your heart, go out there and give it a go.”

Mr Benn held the World Boxing Organisation middleweight title in 1990 and the World Boxing Council super-middleweight title from 1992 to 1996.

He toured facilities at ABC which offers family-friendly gym facilities and tuition in martial arts and boxing.
Also visiting was Nantwich born heavyweight boxing champ Nathan Gorman who is trained by Ricky Hatton.
Mr Benn told youngsters: “You have to have passion, focus and commitment about anything you want to achieve. Having that self-belief is vital.”
