ON TOP OF THE WORLD

LOCAL Macmillan Nurse Breeda Shevlin is on top of the world after completing the challenge of a lifetime to raise a staggering amount of money for St Ann’s Hospice. Having spent months sticking to a strict training regime to ensure she was in shape for the challenge, Breeda finally reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro after a 12 day trek. Breeda is well known across Stockport as a Macmillan nurse working within the local community.
She also works closely with the clinical and Daycare teams at St Ann’s Hospice and feels very passionately about the work that the hospice does to benefit many of her patients. Having funded the trip herself, Breeda has far exceeded her fundraising expectations raising more than £7,000 for St Ann’s.
She has enjoyed considerable local support to help her achieve her bid. This included support from the David Lloyd Leisure Club in Cheadle which organised a huge charity fun day to help raise funds and pay tribute to one of Breeda’s fellow gym members who she nursed before her death last year. The club also supported Breeda with her training regime. Talking about why she decided to take up the Kilimanjaro challenge, Breeda said: “As a Community Macmillan Nurse I have worked closely with St Ann’s Hospice for years and wanted to raise funds to support the excellent care and support provided by the hospice to 3,000 local people each year. “In December I successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in Africa.
It was an amazing experience, very hard work but extremely rewarding. I received an enormous amount of support from family, friends, colleagues, members of the community and local businesses. This has been tremendous and I am extremely grateful.” Three other supporters of St Ann’s Hospice who work for Halliwells in Manchester will also be scaling Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds in March.
